Hideyoshi
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ (July, 1989)
Author: Mary Elizabeth Berry
Average review score:

A fascinating account of Hideyoshi's life and career
"Hideyoshi" is an incredible biography of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who more than anyone else is responsible for transforming Japan from a crazy-quilt of fiefs and feudal lords engaged in civil war to a centralized state at peace. It is one of history's ironies that a child born to a subsistence farmer could end his life as the most powerful man in the country. If you share my admiration of Japan and fascination with its history, don't pass this book up!

Berry captures the grand sweep of Japan's great unifier.
This book provides an excellent portrait of arguably the most important single individual in Japanese history. Berry's scholarship is abundantly informative without being heavy-handed. This account of Hideyoshi's life reads like a narrative and is rich with references from diverse resources. More important than that, however, is the respect Berry shows for the subject matter. She really captures the grand sweep of Hideyoshi's life, which was inseparable from the fate of Japan at the time. This is a must read for anyone interested in Japanese history or anyone wishing to deepen their appreciation of Japanese samurai movies that depict this period of time (the late 1500s).

Holdfast
Published in Library Binding by William Morrow (June, 1972)
Author: J. Beatty
Average review score:

Wonderful, inspirational story with an unforgetable hero.
My sixth grade teacher read this book to our whole class in 1986. I loved the book then for the main reason that Holdfast was such a noble, faithful friend. It is a great story that can teach anyone about some of humanity's most respectable qualities, through the love of an amazing dog. I still love Irish Wolfhounds!!!

I love this dog!!
I read this book when I was 10. That was 24 years ago and I still remember the love for dogs that it inspired in me. I still want an Irish Wolfhound.

Holy Places of the Buddha (Crystal Mirror, Vol 9)
Published in Paperback by Dharma Publishing (March, 1994)
Authors: Dharma Publishing, Tarthang Tulku, and Elizabeth Cook
Average review score:

The most detailed guide available
This is probably the most detailed and thorough guide available to the sacred sites of Buddhism in South Asia, where it first developed. Today this land includes not only the various regions of India, but also Nepal, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, and "Holy Places of the Buddha" includes all of them. Each site is given a full description, including its place in Buddhist history and its condition today, and much of the text is accompanied by helpful maps and photographs. It would take a very long review just to list the many sites that are covered. The real value of this book is in providing a background understanding of the Buddhist holy places, but separate guidebooks (such as the Lonely Planet guides) will be required for instructions on how to get to each place. For anyone interested in Buddhism or South Asian history, and especially for anyone interested in making a pilgrimage to any of the sacred and historic places of Buddhism, I can't recommend this book highly enough.

where the Buddha lived the events and locations
This book was a friendly companion on my trip to India and Nepal. It fully describes events of the Buddha's life that occured at each location. In doing so it brings these Holy Places to life both then and now.

The House of Eliott
Published in Audio Cassette by Chivers Audio Books (July, 1996)
Authors: Stella Gonet and Elizabeth L. O'Leary
Average review score:

Great series...Great book!
I was a huge fan of the series and was truly excited when I saw the book. Jean Marsh does a wonderful job in telling the story of the Eliott sisters and their career as fashion designers in the 1920's. She is able to capture the essence of the 1920's with all it's glamour and it's poverty and neatly weaves them into a terrific story. For anyone who is a fan of the series, this book is a must have.

Fun and Exciting! Loved the book and the Series
I was originally hooked on the A&E Series, "The House of Elliott", and naturally had to read the books. You must read "A House at War" also. I truely wish they would continue the series. This is a fun and uplifting novel that makes you feel like one of the Elliot sisters, Bea and Evie, you feel for their struggles and are thrilled with their successes. Enjoy!

How to Spin Gold: A Woman's Tale
Published in Hardcover by Barrytown Ltd (February, 1997)
Author: Elizabeth Cunningham
Average review score:

Best book I ever read!!!!!!!
HOW TO SPIN GOLD is the best book I've ever read. I loved it, and you'll love it. Buy this book!

Rumplestilkskin was really the Woman of the Wood.
The nameless "girl with the silver eye," an outcast, has a powerful connection with the lovely Miller's Daughter, Orelie. The nameless girl becomes the Woman of the Wood, a power outside the community, while Orelie is called to marry the Prince. The woman of the wood is in love with him, Orelie is not. The gold is spun, the ill-fated marriage is sealed, but the woman of the wood does not get Orelie's first-born--a girl. And yet, in the end, the contract is fulfilled--except that the story is wrong, the one we've all heard, about the spiteful little man whose name is found out. Her name is never known, except by her. A wonderful, compelling read. Hard to put down.
